Set up Camlane on Windows, with the virtual camera and mic
Install Camlane with the Windows installer, install OBS Studio once for its virtual camera driver and VB-Cable for the microphone, then pick “OBS Virtual Camera” and “CABLE Output” in your video app.
Steps
- Install Camlane
Download
camlane-desktop-windows-x86_64-setup.exefrom camlane.live/download/windows and run it. If SmartScreen warns, choose More info, then Run anyway. - Install OBS Studio once
Install OBS Studio 30 or newer from obsproject.com. You don't need to run it: installing it registers the virtual camera driver Camlane uses.
- Install VB-Cable for the microphone
Install VB-Cable from vb-audio.com and restart if it asks. In Camlane, Settings, Audio output, choose CABLE Input.
- Allow Camlane on private networks
When Windows Firewall asks the first time, allow Private networks, and make sure your Wi-Fi is set to Private, not Public.
- Connect your phone
Open Camlane on the phone, tap this computer and type the 6-digit PIN shown in the desktop app.
- Pick the camera and mic in your app
In Zoom, Teams, Meet or Discord, choose OBS Virtual Camera as the camera and CABLE Output as the microphone.
Which file
| File | When |
|---|---|
camlane-desktop-windows-x86_64-setup.exe |
Most people. Installs for your user and adds a Windows Firewall rule named Camlane for private and domain networks |
.msi |
Per-machine installs managed by IT. Doesn’t add the firewall rule |
camlane-cli-windows-x86_64.zip |
The command-line receiver, for headless machines and scripts |
The installers aren’t code-signed yet, so SmartScreen may warn. To check a download before running it, compare its checksum with the builds page:
Get-FileHash .\camlane-desktop-windows-x86_64-setup.exe -Algorithm SHA256
The virtual camera (experimental)
Windows has no built-in virtual camera, so Camlane writes into the driver that OBS Studio installs.
- Install OBS Studio 30 or newer once. You don’t need to run it.
- Camlane starts the driver while a phone is connected and stops it when the phone disconnects.
- In your apps the camera is named OBS Virtual Camera. That’s Camlane’s picture on Windows.
- Don’t press Start Virtual Camera inside OBS at the same time: only one program can write to it.
- To use the phone inside OBS itself, OBS can’t read its own virtual camera. Run
camlane-cli --preview-port 8089and addhttp://127.0.0.1:8089/previewas a Browser or Media source.
If the camera isn’t listed, the app was probably open before the driver existed. Quit it fully (Zoom and Teams keep running in the tray) and open it again.
The microphone: VB-Cable
- Install VB-Cable and restart if it asks.
- In Camlane → Settings → Audio output, choose CABLE Input (VB-Audio Virtual Cable).
- In your app, choose CABLE Output (VB-Audio Virtual Cable) as the microphone.
These two names are easy to swap: Camlane plays into CABLE Input, and apps listen to CABLE Output. To hear the phone yourself as well, open Windows Sound settings → Recording → CABLE Output → Listen to this device. If audio crackles, set VB-Cable to 48000 Hz on both its tabs.
Firewall
The .exe installer adds the firewall rule for you. If the phone still can’t connect, see the firewall guide. Windows blocks most incoming connections on networks marked Public, so set your Wi-Fi to Private in Settings → Network & internet → Wi-Fi → your network.
