The camera wall

Watch mode opens on the wall: every camera live in a grid that fills the window, each with its name, battery and recording state. Double-click one to fill the screen, or pop it out next to your work.

  • 16Cameras on one wall
  • 0.2sUntil the zoomed area turns sharp
  • 0.12CPU core to decode a 9-camera wall
  • F11Full screen
Four cameras on the Camlane camera wall, each tile labelled with its name, battery, time left and recording indicator.
Each tile shows the camera's name, battery and time left, and whether it's recording, moving or paused.

The grid

  • 1 to 16 tiles, as large as the window allows, sorted by name or in your own order: drag a tile, or use Alt and the arrow keys.
  • On every tile: the camera’s name, battery and time left, and Rec, Motion and Paused indicators.
  • Small tiles cost little. Each tile asks for a picture at its own size, and hidden tiles get nothing.

Measured on a desktop with an Intel Core i7-12700 and 9 cameras (six at 720p30, three at 1080p30): the 9-tile wall added about 0.12 of a core to decoding and 4% of a core to drawing, with no dropped frames.

Full screen and pop-outs

Action How
Wall full screen F11 or the button
One camera full screen Double-click a tile or press Enter
Step back Esc, one level at a time. Every full-screen view also has a visible way out
Pop out Any camera, or the whole wall, into its own window, with an optional “Keep on top”

Pop-out windows come back after a restart with the same size, position, monitor and full screen. On Wayland, the compositor places windows, so size and full screen come back but the position is the compositor’s choice.

Zoom into part of the picture

In full screen and pop-outs, scroll, pinch, drag a rectangle or press + and −; drag or use the arrow keys to pan; double-click or press 0 to reset. A small locator shows where you are. The picture follows your hand on the next frame, and about 0.2 seconds after you stop, a sharper stream of just that area replaces it, up to the camera’s own resolution.

Also on the wall

  • Night view on this computer only: Off, Auto (when the picture is dark) or On, with a Brighten setting. It lifts shadows and smooths sensor noise where the picture is still. The camera, other viewers and recordings are unchanged.
  • Snapshot: a full-size still into Pictures/Camlane.
  • Save last minute from the recorder.
  • Talk: hold to talk to a camera that can play your voice. See two-way audio.
